When you start celebrating how you pulled yourself up by your own bootstraps and self-improved, read Rom. 5:6: "For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly."
Being spiritually unable to help yourself, and spiritually unappealing to God because of sin, God still loved you. Look at Rom. 5:8:
"But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
As recipients of God's overwhelming mercy and grace, will you give the person you are struggling with mercy and grace? Will you release them through forgiveness? Will you ask God to help you improve your attitude toward them? Will you initiate reconciliation?
Before you write them off remember, God did not write you off (Eph. 4:32).
